The 3-3-3 Rule
The 3-3-3 rule is a helpful guideline for understanding how long it may take a new cat to adjust to their new home. The rule breaks the transition into three phases: the first three days, the first three weeks, and the first three months.
First 3 days: Decompression
Let your cat come to you – Give them space and allow them to adjust at their own pace.
Prepare a safe space – Set up a quiet room with food, water, and a litter box. We call this Base Camp (see video below) and often suggest your bedroom!
Be patient – While we know they are cute, and you are excited, avoid overwhelming your cat with too much interaction too soon.
First 3 Weeks: Building Comfort
Establish a routine – Begin socializing and gently introducing new experiences.
Provide enrichment – Offer scratching posts, beds, and interactive toys.
Expand their world – Gradually allow supervised access beyond base-camp to the rest of the home.
First 3 Months: Feeling at Home
Deepening the bond – By now, most cats feel comfortable and secure in their new environment.
Stronger connection – You and your cat should have developed a trusting relationship.
Tips for a Smooth Transition
Set up your cat’s space before bringing them home.
Block off hard-to-reach hiding spots.
Offer cozy hideaways like cardboard boxes or covered beds.
Spend quiet time in their space to help them get used to your voice.
Be patient—don’t rush introductions to other pets.
Every cat adjusts at their own pace. Kittens may settle in quickly, while adult and senior cats might need extra time. Remember: all good things take time!
