Legacy planning
As guardians for our cats, we are responsible for their future if we are no longer able to take care of them. Life is unpredictable -- regardless of your age, legacy planning for your cats is important.
For peace of mind when unknowns arise, you will be grateful your beloved pets have a safe place to land with people you trust.
There are many factors to take into consideration when determining the right person to be your pet's next guardian. Ask yourself what you want for your cat if you are no longer able to be there for them. Whom in your circle do you trust to care for your cat? Do they love cats? Do they have other pets? If so, do their pets do well with cats? If they have children, does your cat do well with children? Do they have allergies related to cats? Do they have enough space in their home? If they rent, are there stipulations against cats? Do they have the financial resources to care for your cat if there are vet bills? If not, will you set aside funds for your cat's future care?
Once you have identified whom you want to care for your beloved cat(s) and have confirmed their willingness, it is wise to formalize the agreement in your will, or by writing a letter or email to confirm your understanding. Legacy planning templates can be found online, or you can write your own.
There is really no time like the present to think about the future of your cat!
